Mediterranean Europe: characteristics
Mediterranean Europe is a specific sub-system with unique characteristics, due to socio-hystorical and geographical specificities and to its actual trends. It is a region hystorically characterized by inter-cultural contects along two basic lines: 1) European east/west; 2) Mediterranean North/South Italy is sitted in the middle of these lines as a natural bridge among differenet traditions and cultures.
Linguistic profile of the Mediterranean area is rich, various (romance, slavic, greek, albanian, arabic, semitic and so on) and dynamic, in that it is charecterized by continous contacts.
It is a complex reality which nowadays can be seen as a natural observatory to test european multilingualism policies.
Countries with a rich economy attract people from Eastern and Southern Countries. Social mobility is a challenge that can be faced promoting multilingualism.
